Why diesel can move differently from petrol
Both fuels start with crude oil, but they are different products. Turning oil into diesel has its own costs, and demand for diesel is shaped by freight, farming and industry as well as drivers. A change in the price of crude oil is only part of the picture.
Diesel also shares production and markets with heating oil. Cold weather overseas can increase demand for those fuels, while refinery problems can limit supply. The US Energy Information Administration explains these diesel price pressures. Its examples concern the US, but they help explain why a diesel market can behave differently from a petrol market.

What next week's diesel forecast means
Our forecast compares the expected national average diesel price for next week with this week's average. The forecast for the week after also compares with this week, so the two changes should not be added together.
It is a comparison of whole weeks. It does not predict the price at a particular station on Tuesday, or tell you which nearby station is cheapest. Local prices and discounts can differ from the national average.

What a price change means for your tank
Suppose diesel becomes 5 cents per litre cheaper. On a 60 litre fill, that saves $3. A rise of the same size adds $3. On a smaller 30 litre top-up, the difference is $1.50.
Those are examples, not today's forecast. The amount that matters is the number of litres you actually buy, not the full capacity of your tank. A small predicted saving may not be worth a special trip or changing your plans.
Should you fill up with diesel now or wait?
Use the latest diesel call as a guide:
- Fill soon: prices are expected to rise enough to make an earlier fill worth considering.
- Wait: prices are expected to fall enough to make waiting worth considering, if you have enough fuel for your plans.
- Fill anytime: there is no strong signal that timing your fill will help.
- Not available: there is not enough information to make a call.
Check any reliability note beside the forecast before acting. It is an estimate, and your local price may move differently.
